Topical Bible Studies: Truth

About This Bible Study on Truth

In a world where it is increasingly acceptable to lie, you might be tempted to ask why truth is so important. Does it really matter that much?

In fact, who gets to decide what the truth is? Everyone seems to have a different opinion, and it's increasingly acceptable to have your own definition anyway. But truth is a major theme of the Bible, and we'll find some answers to our questions in this study.

Truth

What is truth?

John 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

Pilate asked Jesus this question: What is truth? (Jn 18:38)

Although Jesus didn't answer Pilate, He had already defined truth in His prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane.

God's Word is truth.

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."

Jesus also claimed that He Himself is the personification of truth.

What responsibility do we have with regard to the truth?

2 Tim 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

God wants us to rightly divide (handle accurately) the word of truth.

Eph 4:15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head; Christ;

Truth by itself is not enough; we are supposed to speak the truth in love.

Gal 3:1 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified?

God expects us to obey the truth, not just to know it.

2 Thes 2:10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

Christians should love the truth.

In a world where lying is prevalent, why is truth so important?

John 4:23-24 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. (24) God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

Truth is one of the non-negotiable factors in being a worshipper of the Father.

John 15:26 But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.

John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of truth, so it's not possible to be filled with the Holy Spirit if we aren't dedicated to the truth.

Eph 5:9 for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth

Truth is a strong component of the fruit of the Spirit.

Eph 6:14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

Truth is part of the Christian's armour; without truth, we are not fully armed to fight the enemy.

1 John 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.

Practising the truth is evidence that we are in fellowship with the Lord.

What are the benefits of being devoted to the truth?

John 8:31-32 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. (32) And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

The truth is what makes us free, but only if we put it into practice.

1 Pet 1:22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,

Obeying the truth brings purity to the soul.
